What if the painting hanging on your wall wasn’t just a painting? What if the woman in the portrait watched you while you slept—or worse, stepped out of the frame when you weren’t looking?
I’ve always loved the idea of haunted paintings and cursed artwork. From Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray to those creepy paintings in Scooby-Doo whose eyes followed the characters around the room, there’s something uniquely unsettling about a picture that might be more than it appears.
After all, a painting is supposed to be harmless. It’s something we hang on our walls and walk past without a second thought. But what if something sinister lurked beneath the canvas?
That’s the idea behind my latest paranormal horror story. When a woman buys a strange painting from an estate sale, her roommate thinks it’s just another creepy addition to her collection of oddities. But what follows is a supernatural nightmare—and getting rid of the painting may not be as easy as it seems.

Why Are Haunted Paintings So Creepy?
Of all the things that might haunt a house, why do paintings make such effective subjects for ghost stories?
I think part of the appeal is how familiar they are. We see pictures and portraits every day. They hang in our homes, decorate hotel rooms, and stare down from the walls of old buildings. Most of the time, we barely notice them.
But a portrait also captures a person’s face and expression, preserving it long after the person is gone. There’s something eerie about looking into the eyes of someone who may have been dead for centuries. And if that person died in a horrible tragedy? Even eerier.
Haunted paintings also blur the line between reality and imagination. Is there really something wrong with the artwork, or are you simply seeing what you expect to see? Did the artist really murder seven people and then paint with their blood, or is that just a rumor? That uncertainty makes a good supernatural story even more disturbing.
And then there’s the question of what might be trapped inside the image. A ghost? A curse? Something that was never human at all?
In fiction, paintings can serve as prisons, portals, or windows into something that should remain hidden. The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of the first that comes to mind, where a portrait becomes the repository for its subject’s corruption and aging. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me has the creepy picture of the open door in Laura Palmer’s room that may or may not be a portal to the Black Lodge.
Horror stories take the concept in all sorts of directions, turning seemingly ordinary artwork into a source of supernatural danger. Just check out the Spooky Painting trope on TV Tropes for more examples.
Cursed Artwork in Real Life
The idea of cursed artwork isn’t limited to fiction. Stories about paintings supposedly associated with misfortune, strange occurrences, and unexplained events have circulated for years.
Whether you believe in curses or enjoy these tales as folklore, they make fascinating reading. Art has always attracted stories about the mysterious, the macabre, and the inexplicable.
If you’d like to explore some real-world legends surrounding allegedly cursed works of art, Wikipedia has a list of “reportedly haunted paintings.” And if you’re ever tempted to bring home a strange portrait from an estate sale, perhaps take a closer look before hanging it above your bed. You never know what stories might come with it.

There’s just one problem: Bea’s hiding something. And it might make her more dangerous than the evil she was hired to fight.
