Free ebooks are the best. They’re a great way for readers to try new series risk-free, and they help authors reach new audiences. But there’s just so many of them that it can be hard to find one you like.
Free ebook Friday spotlights a free ebook I’ve personally read and enjoyed, and hopefully, it’ll help you find a good read. The posts come out on random Fridays, not weekly, and the books featured will probably be speculative fiction.
This week’s pick is:

Justice Calling by Annie Bellet – Between hiding out from her evil ex-boyfriend who wants to steal her power and keeping her friends safe from dangerous magics, Jade Crow has all the problems. For fans of The Dresden Files and the Iron Druid, this is a nerdy urban fantasy full of snark and fireballs.

Empowered: Agent by Dale Ivan Smith – The world says those possessing superpowers are either heroes or villains. But what if you’re both? Former rogue empowered Mathilda Brandt must return to villainy in order to save her family and thousands of others from a psychotic criminal mastermind.
My Thoughts
I’ve been doing Free Ebook Friday for a few months now, and I’m already cheating a bit. I like to feature books that I’ve read, and I haven’t read every book in this box set.
I have read Justice Calling by Annie Bellet, which is currently 99¢ on its own, so you may as well get it for free in this box set along with the other stories–one of which is Empowered: Agent by Dale Ivan Smith.
Empowered: Agent is superhero novel with a near-future dystopia vibe, where people with powers have two choices: sign up for the government superhero team or never use their powers ever. The main character is a former outlaw hero trying to stay on the straight and narrow after getting out of jail. She ends up working for a shady government organization in order to get the medicine that will keep her grandmother alive. It’s a cool setup, and you should definitely check it out.
Justice Calling is another great read. It’s got a fun cast of nerdy, magical characters, a nice bit of romance with a tiger shifter, and one of my favorite tropes: a heroine who’s secretly 100% more badass than she pretends to be but has to keep her powers secret for various reasons. It’s an action-packed urban fantasy that I devoured and would definitely recommend.
I have no idea how long this collection will be free for, so download it while you can!
And if anyone’s read the other books in the set, let me know your thoughts on them in the comments. Happy reading!
