Why Motels Make Such Good Haunted Settings
Sleeping in a strange place is… weird. It can be unsettling to leave the comfort and security of home. When I get to a hotel room, I always check under the beds, in the closets, and put a chair in front of the door to block it before going to bed… just in case. And I can’t be the only one. (…right?)
What makes a motel so creepy? Countless strangers have passed through the room you’re staying in—slept in the bed you’re sleeping in. And you don’t know what they did there. Did they fall asleep after a normal evening? Have weird sex? Do drugs?
Commit murder?
It’s easy to imagine an old motel might be haunted. Some motels lean into it, like the Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada. But most don’t have to. A little dinginess, a mysterious stranger, and a crime having taken place there years ago, and the ghost story practically writes itself.
