It’s finally September, which you may be aware is Self-Published Fantasy Month! Definitely check out the website and #SelfPublishedFantasyMonth hashtag on social media to find some great new indie reads.
The vast majority of the superhero novels I feature on these roundups are by indie authors, and I plan to do some proper Self-Published Fantasy Month posts in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
Now, here are some cool-looking superhero books that came out in July and August. As usual, I haven’t read all these novels personally, so please look at the samples and reviews before purchasing. And happy reading!

Haunted Heroine (Heroine Complex Book 4)
by Sarah Kuhn
The fourth book in the smart, snarky, and action-packed Heroine series follows Evie Tanaka, Aveda Jupiter, and Bea Tanaka as they combat a new supernatural threat.
Everything in Evie Tanaka’s life is finally perfect. As a badass superheroine, she defends San Francisco from demon invasion on the regular. Her relationships with superhero partner Aveda Jupiter, little sister Bea, and hot, half-demon husband Nate have never been stronger. Maybe it’s possible for a grad school dropout turned put-upon personal assistant turned superhero to have it all?
Just when she thinks life can’t get any better, Evie learns she’s pregnant. Everyone around her is overjoyed…but Evie has major doubts about whether she’s cut out for motherhood. Before she can dwell on her dilemma, a local women’s college reports a string of mysterious “hauntings,” and Evie and Aveda are called in to investigate, going undercover as grad students during the creepiest time of the year: Halloween.
As she confronts terrifying ghosts and lives out a bizarre version of the grad school life she left behind, Evie can’t help but wonder about the road not taken: what would her life be like if she’d stayed here instead of pursuing superheroing with Aveda? And can an overwhelmed pregnant superhero truly have it all?
She’s about to find out.
Cute Mutants Vol 1: Mutant Pride
by SJ Whitby
My name is Dylan Taylor, human incarnation of the burning dumpster gif, and this is my life.
I always wanted to be an X-Man. Except people and me never got along, and apparently you need social skills to run a successful team. Cue Emma Hall’s party. One hot make out session with the host herself, and I can talk to objects like my pillow (who’s far too invested in my love life) and my baseball bat (who was a pacifist before I got hold of him). Now there’s a whole group of us with strange abilities, including super hot ice queen Dani Kim who doesn’t approve of how reckless I can be. The bigger problem is a mysterious mutant causing unnatural disasters, and we’re the ones who have to stop him. Except trying to make a difference makes things blow up in my face and the team’s on the verge of falling apart. Can I bring them back together in time to stop the villain from taking revenge? Have I mentioned I’m not a people person? Magneto help us.

Through Thick and Thin: A Menopausal Superhero Short Story Collection
by Samantha Dunaway Bryant
Hidden in the space between chapters lurk other stories—what came before and after, and meanwhile—and the other sides of the stories, including the part our heroines didn’t know. This collection peeks around those corners of the Menopausal Superhero series.
Through Thick and Thin will get you up close and personal with your favorites. Fuerte wasn’t always Fuerte—or male. It’s confession time in “Coming Out as Leonel.” Join Patricia, the Lizard Woman, as she unravels the puzzle of Dr. Cindy Liu’s disappearance in “The Right Thing,” and then see her softer side (and her “better half,” Suzie) in “Underestimated.” Get ready for a wedding, and a heroic rescue, in “Flygirl’s Second Chance.”
These aren’t your father’s superheroes. Whether you’re already a fan or are just meeting these characters for the first time, the menopausal superhero series explores what it means to be a hero at any age or stage of life.
Caped and Dangerous: Superhero romantic comedy (Grumpy Superheroes Book 1)
by Isabel Jordan
Being a superhero is not all it’s cracked up to be
Saving the day is sometimes the last thing Greer Glenanne wants to do. But as her city’s official superhero, she really doesn’t have much of a choice. It doesn’t matter that she’s forty-six, grumpy, and annoyed by most of the population. She’ll catch whatever criminals she needs to catch because that’s the gig. Next up on her to-catch list?
He’s stupid-hot, way too charming for her liking, a decade younger than her, potentially a supervillain…and he flirts with her mercilessly.
How’s a superhero supposed to do her job when she can’t seem to keep her mind (and hands) off the bad guy?
Caped and Dangerous (told in 3rd person, dual point of view) is book 1 in the Grumpy Superheroes series. It features a sexy, cocky billionaire, a mature, younger man/older woman romance, one seriously snarky heroine, and plenty of laughs. Also, the characters cuss a lot. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. For the rest of you, download today and let the binge-reading begin.
