My Top 10 Books of 2023

Published by

If there’s one thing I like almost as much as reading books, it’s recommending them. And I may be reading (and writing) less now that I’m a full-time parent, but I still finished a lot of books in 2023.

It’s hard to narrow them down to my top ten, but I’m going to try.

These are books I personally read in 2023, not necessarily ones that were published this year. It’s a mix of genres, so hopefully you’ll find something you like.

In no particular order:

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder

by Valerie Burns

This was such a fun cozy mystery. I didn’t think I would like the heroine at first, but she had a fantastic character arc and is now one of my favorite amateur sleuths.

Death of a Fairy Tale

by Emily Fluke

This has such a great mix of humor from the witty heroine and darkness from the paranormal mystery plotline. And because the heroine of this novel just had a baby and I read it while I was taking care of my newborn, I found it super relatable.

The Accidental Alchemist

by Gigi Pandian

I loved all the historical tidbits about alchemy I learned while reading this cozy mystery, but my favorite part was the talking gargoyle sidekick who’s also an excellent chef.

Dragon Fae Prophecy

by Caethes Faron

I love badass assassin heroines who are still sympathetic, so this book hit my sweet spot when it comes to urban fantasy tropes.

I Spy a Psychic Eye

by J.J. Brass

This was the coziest of cozy mysteries. I loved the relationship between the protagonist and her niece, and the touch of paranormal (the protagonist getting psychic visions after eye surgery) was really fun.

The Quarter Storm

by Veronica G. Henry

This is an urban fantasy/paranormal mystery, and it has such a richly detailed setting. The heroine was incredibly engaging, and it was a fascinating and obviously well-researched take on Vodou.

A Quiet Life in the Country

by T E Kinsey

The sassy banter in this book. So amazing. If you like historical cozy mysteries, you need to try this one. It’s so much fun.

Ethereal Secrets

by Whitney Hill

While I’m making my way through this series at a super slow pace, it remains one of my favorite urban fantasies. Each book just keeps getting better.

Goblin Mischief

by Kyler Anne Ford

Speaking of urban fantasy, this one had one of the most unique magic systems I’ve ever come across. You don’t find many half-goblin heroines in the genre, but I’d love to see more if they’re all this well-written and fun.

A Crepe to Die For

by Felicity Collins

I had such a craving for crepes after reading this book. It’s a great culinary cozy mystery with a good sprinkling of clues pointing to the murderer.

And those are my top ten! What were your favorite books this year?
