8 Funny Memes for Readers

I think we could all use a good laugh. Memes are one of the greatest (worst?) gifts the internet has given us, and here are seven only readers will appreciate.

Balloon meme with text "reader," "the end of the book," and "the realization there's no way so much conflict can be wrapped up in so few pages."

We’ve all been there. If we’re lucky, the book has a sequel. If not… you can either cry or throw the book across the room. Your choice.

Meme showing Wonder Woman laughing with text "when someone asks if I have enough books"

The good news is that if a book disappoints you, there’s always another. You can never have too many books.

2020 Accomplishments and 2021 Goals

First off, let me specify that this post is purely writing related. Looking at the big picture, I’m incredibly grateful to have made it through 2020 with my health and finances intact. I hope for the same in 2021.

Writing is a big stress-reliever for me and one that I definitely need right now. So for the moment at least, I’m going to push aside the dumpster fire that is current events and talk solely about writing and publishing.

Published in 2020

I’m proud to have published three books last year, a big accomplishment for me since I’ve averaged one per year until now. (I think the most I ever managed in the same year was two.)

Dark and Otherworldly Ebooks

The Dark and Otherworldly series was my first foray into publishing urban fantasy, which is a genre that I love to read. I’d actually written urban fantasy books before then, but that was back in my early days as an author, and they were horrible novels that will remained banished to the depths of my hard drive forever.

Magic, warfare, and romance collide in this action-packed conclusion to a spellbinding urban fantasy series.

Leigh Morgan defeated the magical, monstrous denizens of Otherworld. She survived the curse their queen put on her in revenge and wielded their most legendary weapon in battle. But the demonic forces invading Otherworld now are worse than anything she’s ever fought: powerful, cruel, and cannibalistic.

Leigh would return to the human world and leave the arrogant Others to rot except for one reason: Prince Dredarion Rath, the sly, sorcerous man who stole her heart. She’ll fight at his side to save his people even if it means joining forces with her former enemies. But when the worst happens and Leigh ends up cut off from Dredarion, injured and imprisoned, she’ll have to find a way to save the kingdom and the prince alone…or die trying.

Read the final installment in the Dark and Otherworldly series and get swept away in forbidden romance, epic battles, and deadly magic. The Cruelest Curse is a romantic fantasy novel that fans of the genre won’t want to miss. Buy now and return to Otherworld for one last adventure.

(While I try to give short refreshers of the events of previous books, you really need to read the first two novellas to understand this one, so if you’re a new reader, I recommend you start with Poison and Honey.)

It’s hard to believe this series is over. Thank you all for coming on this journey with me, and I hope you enjoy the final installment.

Read the First Chapter of Sting of Thorns

We are less than a month away from the September 15th release of Sting of Thorns, my urban fantasy novella about fey curses, conflicted loyalties, and magic swords. Check out the first chapter below!

Chapter 1

Dredarion Rath reached the stairs to the dungeons and paused. He felt feverish, sweating under his armor, though the halls of the palace were crisp and cool. He inhaled slowly and started down the steps—not because he was ready but because he couldn’t allow any of his people to see their prince hesitate.

The ceiling was so low that he nearly had to duck. The stone steps were timeworn, the gray brick walls chipped and water stained. The graceful opulence that infused every inch of the palace was absent down there. The light fixtures were the only similarity: metallic lanterns imprisoning tiny glowing sprites, though these were in a sorry state. Their feeble, greenish light barely penetrated the dirty glass, and they shrank from him as he stalked past.

At the bottom of the stairs awaited a damp, chilly chamber that turned his sweaty skin cold and clammy. The stench of piss and feces lingered amid the mildewy air, though the cells lining the right wall were empty save one prisoner:

Leigh Morgan, the woman Dredarion had once thought he might love. Continue reading Read the First Chapter of Sting of Thorns

Poison and Honey CoverKeep your head down. Watch out for dark magic. And whatever you do, stay away from the sly, handsome prince.

Leigh Morgan has known that magic exists ever since an unearthly monster abducted her sister. It’s why she’s in Otherworld now, posing as a servant in its dark, decadent palace. She’s gathering intelligence and working with a small band of allies to bring down the Others and free their human captives. Her mission depends on blending in, so the last thing she wants is to attract the attention of a cunning prince.

Dredarion Rath wants one thing: to disgrace his older brother and prove himself the worthier heir to the throne. And out of all the servants in the palace, he chooses Leigh to help him. Just her luck.

Now Leigh has to keep her work a secret from a bewitching man who sees right through her–and who’s not nearly as cold and inhuman as he seems. She can’t screw this up, or the humans forced into servitude will never go home. But juggling two conspiracies at once, it’s only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down, and the man she’s falling for has her executed for her betrayal…

Poison and Honey is an urban fantasy novella with a strong romantic subplot, perfect for fans of determined heroines, palace intrigue, and the fae. Download it today and venture into Otherworld—if you dare.

Chapter 1

Leigh Morgan was having a nightmare about the horse-headed man when someone shook her awake. Her eyelids shot open, and every muscle in her body tensed. Where was she? Where was the closest weapon?

Awareness followed a second after consciousness. Kitchens. Dozed off. No danger. Well, no serious danger anyway. Mistress Yibba’s plump face filled her vision, the disapproving line of her mouth like a cut in a lump of dough. She slapped Leigh for nodding off, which Leigh took without comment. Thank God Mistress Yibba had woken her up first. If she’d slapped Leigh while she’d been sleeping, Leigh might have struck back before she could stop herself, and that would have been a disaster.

“Lady Kalivildra rang for tea,” Mistress Yibba said. “Bring it to her room. Quickly.”

Her tone would have been threatening if Mistress Yibba were… well, threatening. But she was just bluster and sloppy slaps. Pretending to be contrite, Leigh took the tea tray from Mistress Yibba’s hands, bowed, and left the drowse-inducing heat of the kitchens for the cool palace halls.

It was late at night—early morning really—but the evening’s revelries were still winding down. Music drifted through the corridors, an enchanting nocturne that enticed the listener to search for its source. An open door to one of the gardens revealed a woman in a luminous ball gown, dancing with several naked, green-skinned men. Moans came from a secluded corner where two half-dressed, inhuman bodies were entwined. A drunken man stumbled to bed, the feathers of his wings ruffled and his ornamental mask askew. Leigh walked past it all, more bored than anything.

Until someone grabbed her arm and pulled her into a shadowed alcove. Continue reading Read the First Chapter of Poison and Honey

Upcoming Read-Along of The White Knight & Black Valentine Series

Heads up, everybody! Book review blog One Book Two is hosting a read-along of The White Knight and Black Valentine Series next month!

What’s a read-along? You can find a detailed explanation on One Book Two‘s website here, but basically, you read the books at the same time as the other people who’ve joined the read-along and then participate in discussions and polls in the Goodread group.

If you’ve fallen behind in the series and want to catch up, this is the perfect chance. It’s also a good opportunity to reread the whole series now that the last book is out, or just a good chance to connect with other fans.

You can find the full schedule on One Book Two here. Hero Status‘s reading period starts on April 1st–and no, that’s not an April Fool’s joke. 😉 Get your Kindles, Nooks, and Kobo ereaders ready and join the Goodreads group now!

Read the first chapter of Kill Them All

We’re less than two months away from the release date of Kill Them All! I like to call this novel a “supervillain revenge thriller,” so expect lots of superpowered action and a snarky first-person POV. I love writing Val, a glamorous, middle-aged, semi-retired supervillain who just wants to protect her family. Though loving her doesn’t stop me from putting her through hell in this book. 😉

A big thank you to everyone who’s been following The White Knight and Black Valentine Series from the beginning, and a warm welcome to new readers who just discovered the books recently! I hope this preview gets you hyped, and that you enjoy the whole book when it hits the shelves. Continue reading Read the first chapter of Kill Them All
